I have been a myspace member since 2005 or ‘06 but I have only recently been active this past few weeks because their web page had gotten cooler (^_^). I never had the best experience with it when I was starting out because most of the people that I do know personally preferred their Friendster account and most of the people asking for friend requests on my account are just guys. Not a lot of musical artists have accounts then so I wasn’t much interested. So years dragged on and I don’t even check friend requests or messages that I would get via email.
It was exactly Nov. 15 that I got an email from MySpace saying “You’re losing it…’, this was the letter they sent me:
Your MySpace URL – www.myspace.com/gypsygirl13 is about to be taken away, so you may lose it forever. This is the unique URL you chose for yourself (such as www.MySpace.com/Tom)
It’s been some time since you’ve logged in and used your MySpace URL. You’re holding a very valuable piece of MySpace real estate, which is the URL you chose.
Since it doesn’t look like you’re an active user on this account, we will be resetting your username/URL so that someone else can use it.
How do you keep it for yourself? Simply login to your account right now by clicking here. That’s it!
While you’re there, check out the new feature that lets you automatically find people you may know. Just click the link: http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=peopleyoumayknow
So my first reaction was ‘okay, fine’. I got curious so I went ahead and logged in to my account just wanting to see what’s up with it. I had to ask for my password to the boyfriend before because he was actually the one putting updated pics in there. Okay so at first nothing much changed but somewhere on the upper part of the page says ‘page themes’, hhhmmm my curiosity peaked and clicked it and there I found out that I don’t have to look at the boring blue and white anymore and choose though they have limited designs I’m pretty sure I can pick one that I like. With just this one change I’ve been completely excited what I would do next. I started making my own friend requests to my favorite bands and artists, most of them have accounts now so ‘yay!’ for me. I also got a lot of friend requests from unsigned bands and some people who shared some of my interests. Now I get picky who I choose to be friends with, I do a bit of ‘background check’ well I just basically go to their profile and make a look-see. If I like what I see I ‘approve’ if not then nothing. Question: am I friendly? Yes, but pls. only to a point. I only wanted to keep my account so I can get updates from the bands and artists that I do like, if I can make friends along the way then good. It seems that there would be times you get across people who doesn’t seem to like to be just friends. Everyone can see in my profile if they care to look that my status is ‘in a relationship’ but why oh why there are those who think that I might be interested in other than friendship. Am I being too self conscious? I don’t know, maybe I should be flattered but I’m not.
What makes MySpace a great place to hang out or stay on line for? It’s the free access to music and sometimes videos from well-known artists/bands and those gem-like unsigned bands that just wants to make their music known. Just for that I’m going to check on my account everyday from now on. Will edit this post if anything/something good or bad happens in my ‘myspace’ world.
